Sometimes I just plain screw up! I hate it! I certainly did just the other day while grocery shopping. The clerk behind the seafood counter knows to give me time to look, lots of time. Honestly it just takes a bit of time to read all the labels to determine which fish is wild , or farm-raised, or wild caught. (A color-coding of the lables would make my life easier.) Anyway I had just spotted the label, ‘Sockeye Salmon – Wild Caught’ when my husband distracted me. Just as he said, “Get some salmon,” the clerk asked if he could help me. Thinking the $9.99 a pound was a bit pricey, I asked for a six-inch chunk from the widest end. No problem. As the clerk handed me my package of wrapped fish my husband asked the clerk, “Is it really $29.99 a pound?” I inhaled a large breath. “Yep”, he said. “Frst Alaskan run, never frozen.” Yikes! I thought the two on the price tag was a dollar sign! Afraid to look at my chunk of pricey fish, I noticed the weight was three-quarters or bit more of a pound! I cringed but I had to look at the price! OMG! $24.79. Dang! My husband gave me his ‘oh well’ look and I placed the fish in the cart as though it was made of the most fragile china. I could not ask the clerk to take it back. I have given him enough grief over my seafood selections in the past. Nothing to do but swallow my pride, pay for the fish and think about the perfect method to prepare this expensive food. The things I could have purchased with $25.00! Good wine, an entire meal at my favorite restaurant, several gallons of gas, who knows! I hate making mistakes when shopping so much! Pricey mistakes are even more painful! I took my morsel of fish home having learned a valueable lesson. Read the labels carefully and think before I order. Hmmm – really I blame it all on my chatty husband. Shame on him!
