Often I find myself wondering how much money I have spent on Tupperware, or RubberMaid, or who knows what brand of plastic container. Maybe enough to take a mini-vaction, or enough to buy an entire case of really good wine, or perhaps enough to pay for a semester’s worth of books for one of our kids in college. Guilty. I bought them. Years ago I would attend parties I pretty much did really not want to attend. The hostess would go on and on about how wonderful the plastic container was, latest innovation, blah, blah, blah. More recently a catolog would be passed my way. So thankful I didn’t have to attend a ‘party’ I usually bought something. Something I didn’t need! I have this drawer in my kitchen that eats plastic lids. I swear it really does. I have more containers than lids. Some of the lids barely resemble lids at all after falling to the bottom of the dishwasher, or getting too close to the stove. I give up! I no longer buy containers for the sake of buying a container. I reuse containers that food originally came in to store and even freeze food. Plastic mayonaise and peanut butter jars are great storage and freezer containers. Olives come in the handiest glass jars as does most salsa. Pimentos arrive in the teeniest, tiniest glass jars that work great for saving a dollup of this or that. Not only do I save on plastice containers, but I am keeping a bit of plastic and glass out of the landfill by repurposing these containers. So practical, I don’t know why I didn’t think of it before!
