A Simple Little Thing

Sometimes the simplest little things are the best.  In my shelves and bins full of kitchen gadgets the one I use so frequently is the one that cost the least, only a dollar years and years ago.  Still being sold today I recently noticed something similar at a kitchen store for $3.00. Antique shops usually have them as well and those too are never expensive.  What is it?  It’s just a simple shaker with a screw-top lid.  I keep mine filled with flour.  It comes in so handy for shaking a bit onto pasta dough, or bread dough that is just a bit too sticky.  It works just as well for dusting a surface you are going to set dough on, or sifting a bit of flour onto an oiled baking pan.  I often put this to use when I need to thicken a sauce by just sprinking a bit of flourright onto the surface of the sauce and quickly whisking it in.  The fine dusting of flour never clumps when added to sauces.  Someday I will remember and pick up a few more, one for powdered sugar, one for cornstarch, baking cocoa, and who knows what else!

Growing up my mother’s shaker had cinnamon sugar for those pie crust scraps that she made into cinnamon crispies. She also made our cinnamon rolls and cinnamon bread for toast.
